From Art Walks in Oceanside, to Family Fun Nights at the San Diego Botanic Gardens, to even a Food Truck Festival at Bates Nut Farm, there is definitely a wide assortment of activities going on in North County. Looking for a few more ways to entertain the kids before they head back to school? Head on over to the San Diego Botanic Gardens every Thursday from 6-7pm throughout the month of August or Family Fun Night and some outdoor fun! From dance teams to a kid-folk band and even a puppet show, there is certainly fun for all! Oh, and for all you garden lovers, the gardens are open 4:30-8pm these evenings.
We all know that Oceanside is home to military, skate and surf. But did you know that it is now becoming a thriving art district? Don’t miss the next Oceanside’s monthly First Friday: Oceanside Art Walk taking place on Friday, August 7th from 6-9pm. Throughout downtown Oceanside businesses and civic centers, the streets come alive with vibrant arts, performances, music, poetry, activities and food. This even is free and fun for all ages, so bring the family!
The largest dog-centric event in San Diego is just around the corner! Dog Days of Summer in Cardiff is celebrating their 10th annual event on Sat. Aug. 8th from 9:30am-6pm. Bring your dog to enjoy dog contests including Cutest Puppy, Dog/Owner Look-A Like, Best Looking Big + Small Dog. After the contests, enjoy a beer at the Lost Abbey beer garden and catch some tunes from local talented musicians. Does your dog love the water? Sign him up for this years first-ever Dog Diving contest! Sounds like a splashing good time!
Looking to spruce up your home with some fresh new art? Or maybe itching for some new funky hand-crafted jewelry? Head on over to Carlsbad on August 9th for the 17th Annual Art in the Village event bringing over 150 local and regional artists for a one-day, open air event. Fine artists display a variety of mediums including oil paintings, watercolors, photography, mixed media, as well as classic and contemporary sculpture. Additionally, this event includes many artisans who work in mediums of jewelry making, woodworking, pottery to even furniture and hand-painted clothing.
Time to get one “s’more” summer family vacation in with a family camping trip! Before the kiddos head back to school, pack up the car and get ready to pitch a tent in the great outdoors! There are many camp sites in North County to choose from. If you don’t already have a reservation at a local coastal site, check out Guajome Regional Park, it has a little bit of everything San Diego has to offer. Lots of green lawn ideal for picnicking, playgrounds, shade and afternoon ocean breezes! Time to bust out those classic campfire tunes, what are you waiting for?!
Looking to polish off your summer with a little adventure! Take a hike and explore Iron Mountain Trail in Poway. This 5.8 mile trek has a difficulty level of moderate to difficult, but with its boulder-lined trail, makes it manageable for most hiking levels. While it starts off rather flat, you’ll be doing switchbacks and taking in breathtaking vistas in no time. Don’t forget water and sunscreen! Happy hiking!
Urban wineries are starting to pop up all over San Diego! Urban wineries take grapes from the country, but make the wine in the city! Some of our favorites in North County include: 1. BK Cellars in Escondido – One of the newest urban wineries with an industrial setting and cosmopolitan flare. Don’t miss the live music on Friday and Saturday evenings! 2. Fifty Barrels in Vista – A fully functioning production facility that handles everything locally on site and co-ops with 15 acres in Paso Robles. 3. Soleterra Winery & Kitchen in Leucadia – Located right off the historic 101 and additionally features restaurant with a full kitchen serving Mediterranean tapas. 4. Witch Creek Winery in Carlsbad – The 1st coastal urban winery in San Diego known for making unique single varietal red wines and blends. Can’t agree on what you want for lunch? Go to a place that has it all! Head on over to Bates Nut Farm on Saturday, August 15th for the annual Food Truck Festival featuring Southern California’s top gourmet food trucks! The festival runs from 2-8pm, is free admission and will have live entertainment and a beer garden. Bring the kids too! With arts and crafts and a kids zone, there is certainly someone for everyone!
Don’t miss the 11th Annual Leucadia Art Walk happening on 8/30 from 10am-5pm! Local juried artists will be flooding the Coast Highway 101 in Leucadia displaying original art with open house hours at all local Leucadia Art Galleries. Enjoy a free ride in a double decker bus to shuttle you to and from designated parking. Over 5,000 people are anticipated to attend and enjoy the art, Lost Abbey beer garden, musical performances and a new Kids Zone with mural painting and art stations!
