Hello July! This summer if flying by, but the fun is not over yet! On top of San Diego being one of the prime locations in the country to celebrate Independence Day with a plethora of breathtaking firework shows, that is only a fraction of the fun that July has to offer. Enjoy the beach and some live music with free concerts at Moonlight Beach in Encinitas. Speaking of concerts, don’t forget about the awesome lineup of bands at the 4 O’Clock Friday concert series at Del Mar Fairgrounds. As the Fair wraps up, the horse races begin! Start crafting those hats, grab a Mint Julep as Opening Day of the Del Mar Horse Races is July 16th!
Take a break from the beach and get closer to nature with Family Fun Days at San Elijo Lagoon! On July 6th, from 11:30-1:30pm, kids can enjoy “Ancient Artifacts & Skulls” activities where they can uncover secrets of our past in a mock dig site. The theme for Family Fun Days this summer is Kumeyaay, the Native American people who once relied upon this wetland for food, shelter, clothing and medicine. After, take a family hike on a fun-filled adventure with Track Trails. This event is free with a $1 suggested donation.
Grab your blankets and picnic basket and enjoy the cherished Disney classic, Mary Poppins, at the Moonlight Amphitheater in Vista! Spend your evening in the great outdoors snuggled up while enjoying those beautiful Southern California summer nights. How “supercalifragilisticexpialidocious” does that sound?! This play features all of the unforgettable songs of the movie plus new breathtaking musical numbers and spectacular effects for a magical experience for both children and adults. Tickets run from $20-52 and will play from July 16-Aug. 2
Calling all early birds! Stop by Tamarack State Beach on July 13th at 7:30am to cheer on the competitors in the 33rd Annual Carlsbad Triathlon! Watch these impressive athletes embark on a 1K ocean swim, 25K two-lap bike ride and a 5K run! Bring some bells, make some signs, or just cheer and whistle to give these athletes a little extra push. Following the race will be a Lifestyle & Fitness Festival as well as awards ceremony.
July is the perfect month to fire up those grills and picnic in the park. Looking for the perfect spot to do so? Check out San Dieguito County Park in Del Mar – a 125-acre park featuring a variety of recreational activities including playgrounds, exercise stations, a basketball court, large open lawn and picnic areas as well as BBQ’s and restrooms. The park is open daily from 9:30am-sunset.
Time to show off those festive hats, get dressed up, grab a mint julep and cheer on the horses for Opening Day at the Del Mar Racetrack! More than 45,000 race fans are expected to flock this annual bash! July 18th kicks off the 4 O’Clock Friday’s Summer Concert Series at Del Mar Racetrack! Concerts are free with racetrack admission, or $20 if you arrive after the last race of the day. July’s concert series includes Jurassic 5 and the Cult. But stay tuned for August as they will featuring many more concerts including Weezer, Counting Crows and Ziggy Marley to name a few!

It’s time to treat your puppy to some summer fun! Take your furry friend to the newest off-leash dog park around town! The dog park at Alga Norte Community Park, which just opened December 2013, is divided into areas for larger and smaller dogs. The park even includes obstacle course play equipment for your dog to test out and show off some tricks!
